13 Peaks Challenge

The problem

Ryan created the 13 Peaks Challenge as a way to promote endurance running and the beauty of the mountains around Cape Town. It's not a commercial project and Ryan isn't a web developer nor does he have a team to help him maintain the site. So, Ryan needed a site that was easy to manage but still had all the coolness and excitement that he wanted to express through the site. The site needed to be low maintenance and robust yet seem dynamic.

The solution

I needed to ensure the site had a strong identity that relects the young, dynamic nature of ultra-running

Like many small projects, Wordpress provides a great platform for building cost-effective, feature rich sites. However, there is a tendency for Wordpress sites to look a little samey. I needed to ensure the site had a strong identity that relects the young, dynamic nature of ultra-running.

My involvement

I designed the front-end of the website, and built a fully bespoke Wordpress theme on top of Bootstrap. The site incorporates some nice featurs like parallax scrolling images, lazy loading and a full screen video that seamlessly plays on load. I also created a bespoke plugin that manages the athletes who've completed the challenge: allowing them to upload hteir times, GPS files and photos; and then allows Ryan to easily add them to the Wall of Honour.
